Tusker Project fame 6

The biggest and most popular music show in East Africa, TPF season 6 has kicked off with awesome performances from talented youngsters, however like it was planned earlier, three of the contestants were supposed to leave show on right on the opening show.
After all the great performances from the contestants, the judges had to decide which housemates were safe to enter the academy and which housemates were not entering the academy.
The judge’s final decision saw 15 contestants make it to the Academy while Tanah and Dubart both Tanzania got the boot, Rwanda’s Peace did also not survive.

TPF6 – Tusker project fame 6 Faculty

Eric Wainaina - Principal

Erick WainainaEric Wainaina seems to have been born to “speak truth to power”.   His middle class up-bringing in Nairobi and thorough music grounding at the Berklee College of Music don’t make him the most likely candidate for leading social revolutions, yet this is precisely what he has done ,time and again, through his music, right from his career onset in Nairobi.  His earliest songs, Daima and Nchi Ya Kitu Kidogo became anthems sung across the country – both of them powerful indictments of the authoritarian and ethnically divisive governments that have governed Kenya since independence. The soft-spoken and fiercely focused musician has never allowed his attention to be removed from the business of crafting excellent music – from his earliest days of meticulous harmony training in the hit a cappella group, 5 Alive through his first engagements with creating a new contemporary sound for Kenyan music – blending Benga rhythms from the 60s and 70s with western harmony to produce what is now dubbed Afro Fusion. His two award-winning records, Sawa Sawa(2001) and Twende Twende(2006) are still amongst the highest selling records in Kenya .His lyrical and melodic prowess make him a highly sought-after composer in collaborative projects as well as on-screen music.  He was recently commissioned to write the music for a United Nations MDG campaign entitled “8 Goals for Africa” which featured African greats such as Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Oliver Mtukudzi and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. He also wrote and starred in the musical theatre production, Mo Faya!, which was presented  to sold-out houses in at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and at the The Godown Arts Centre in Nairobi.
Berklee Experience:
During his years at Berklee, Eric worked to produce a sound that would be distinctively Kenyan; both in the music and lyrical content.  He maintained a solid presence in Nairobi, travelling home every year and releasing tracks that earned and kept his place in the local music charts and in the hearts of the Kenyan Public. He was awarded the Jack Maher Scholarship for his distinction in song writing and the Yo Team award for excellence in music among other distinctions. He maintains a close relationship with Berklee where he serves as a member of the African Scholars Award Board.

An accomplished stage musician, Eric has appeared on African and Global stages ,putting East Africa on the map as a space to look to for dynamic performers. Some of the events he has graced include:-

Tusker Project Fame 5 winner: Ruth Matete

Ruth Matete won Tusker Project Fame 5, 2012. The final order of contestants was:

1. Ruth
2. Doreen
3. Jackson
4. Joe

Kenya’s Ruth Matete jumped with joy and  lay flat on stage moments after she was announced winner of Tusker Project Fame season 5 singing competition, bagging Sh5 million and a recording contract worth Sh10 million.

An elated Ruth, aged 26, beat four finalists on Sunday night and thanked God for her success when addressing the crowd.

Joe from Burundi was number four, followed by Jackson from Rwanda

There were moments of tension after Ruth and another Kenyan contestant, Doreen were left standing, becoming clear that one of the two will walk away with the prize.

Doreen, had come to be known as the ‘Miss Probation’, thanks to numerous consecutive nominations for probation, and surprised many that she made it to the finals.

The competition started with 15 contestants drawn from East African countries with 11 being evicted before Sunday’s finals.

Tusker Project Fame 4 winner: Davis Ntare

Davis Hillary Ntare is the Tusker Project Fame 4 winner for 2010

Davis Ntare won Tusker Project Fame 4 in 2010. The final order of contestants was:

1.Davis Ntare
2.Peter Msechu
3. Steven Nyabwa
4.Ameleena Mwenesi

Davis Ntare is TPF 4 Winner
Davis Hillary Ntare is the Tusker Project Fame 4 winner for 2010. Davis staved off strong competition from Tanzania’s Peter  Msechu who came in second, and Kenyans Steven Nyabwa (3rd place) and only woman left standing Amileena Mwenesi (4th place).

Davis makes history as the first contestant in the Tusker Project Fame Academy to bounce back from being rejected to winning the top award. Davis had failed to make the final cut into the 2009 Tusker Project Fame Academy 3 house. Despite that massive disappointment, the singer decided to audition again for the 2010 academy. Davis actually travelled to Nairobi to audition because he missed the Kampala leg of the 2010 auditions.

Davis now bags 5 million Kenya shillings in prize money. He also stands to benefit from a year long free studio time recording offer with South Africa’s Gallo records. As well various other perks like in studio training from expert session musicians and producers.

Only time will tell though if Davis manages to carve a musical career and further stardom outside the Tusker Project Fame Academy confines. Previous winners like 2009’s Rwandese winner Alpha Rwirangira, and 2008’s Ugandan Esther Nabaasa have not enjoyed stellar careers as was expected. Alpha’s performance at the opening of the TPF 4 ceremony showed he was a pale shadow of the Lucky Dube energetic admirer he was while Nabaasa has barely registered on the musical scene even in Uganda though there is talk of a second album in the studio that should rescue her career. TPF 1 winner Valerie Kimani has cultivated a slightly more active career since her 2007 winner.

On this night of his win, Davis was overcome with emotion when he was announced the 2010 TPF 4 winner. The singer collapsed the floor, lying spread-eagled until he had to be helped up by his former competitors as he fought back tears. The singer’s emotional reaction did not leave a dry eye in the audience as Ugandan judge Juliana Kanyomozi also had to wipe away tears. The faculty members seemed as equally stunned and moved by the singer’s reaction, who on this night, had perhaps had his poorest performance. Davis performed Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean as his encore and Judge Ian spoke for the more critical when he slammed the musician for a below par performance on the night.

However all that was quickly forgotten when Davis was declared the winner.
